Preemptive ripping off?
I just got finished watching the Vol. 4 DVD for Mai-HiME…and I thought to myself, “How the heck did I know there actually was a karaoke scene in this show?” I had included one in Chapter 6 of my fanfic, but I hadn’t actually started watching the first DVD until the end of January (and I really need to get back up to speed on the recaps, but more on that later). No, I’m not psychic, but I’m starting to wonder now.
Some stream-of-consciousness notes on Episodes 13-16 after the jump.
Episode 13: Night of the Tamayura: Peace in our time, kinda-sorta, and love is in the air. Hey, what the hell? Did a bridge just explode downtown? And why is Yuuichi trying to interrupt a moment between Mai and Reito, with Shiho (who asked him out in a date) standing right next to him? That decision’s probably the romantic equivalent of trying to juggle swords using only your feet. I’m pretty sure this is going to bite him in the ass later.
Episode 14: The Targeted Academy: And now, the Searrs army has invaded the school, and is holding everybody hostage in search of the HiME. Haruka tries to chase the guards away by kicking a fucking tank. Now, that takes guts. All of the known HiME are captured and taken underground as Alyssa’s Artemis satellite moves into position to bring the school to its knees.
Episode 15: A High School Girl Soars to the Heavens: The girls take a trip to the underground Obsidian Shrine to formulate a plan to reclaim the school. As of this episode, there are eight known active HiME…there’s Mai, Mikoto, Natsuki, Midori, Yukariko, Yukino (who can’t fight, but can spy), Nao, and Akira (still loose on campus looking after Takumi, and unable to participate in the operation). Akane used to be one, but she got a bad case of PTSD after Miyu got her. The rest of them confront Alyssa and Miyu and subdue the Searrs army with teamwork, but Mai (probably?) gets blown away in the process of attacking the satellite. Alyssa doesn’t make it, but not out of any action on the heroines’ part. Joseph takes her out, and then Miyu kills him. Thanks for your many years of loyalty, pal!
Episode 16: Parade: She got better. (Of course, she would; otherwise, there’d be no story). She visits Shiho in the hospital (who’s still mad at her, but finally decides to fess up about her feelings for Yuuichi and give him a kiss on the cheek, which is one more than Mai’s gotten all series thus far). Midori and friends celebrate their victory with a night of karaoke, and then return to the school to prepare to fight the Orphans once again…but wait! Nagi’s reappeared, and he says there won’t be any more Orphan fighting. Good news, right? Nope! That big red star in the sky is falling quickly, and only one person’s going to be able to use its power. The new target? The HiME themselves! So much for friendship…and there are still two or three more whose powers haven’t yet been revealed. Uh-oh.
