Mikoto-centric post today
Today, instead of focusing this post from the you-know-what show on Mai and Natsuki like I usually do, I figured I’d write something pertaining to Mikoto, the third main character of the anime (since I’m also doing a set of stories partially centered around her).
It’s weird…one moment, you search the Internet looking for pictues of Shizuru in a bunny costume, and the next, you’re reading a piece of Mai-HiME fanfiction from Mikoto’s point of view, simply because it has the words “Shizuru” and “bunny” in it. For what it’s worth, the fic (entitled “One Crazy Dream“, because it was based on a dream the author had before writing it) is actually decent. I don’t know how to describe it, really…Mikoto helping Shizuru and Natsuki get away from a bandit attack, or something like that. It was kinda random, but the characterization was good. Mikoto does a lot of narration in this one, which is a bit of a change from her anime/manga personality, and it shows that she’s taken some pains to learn about the outside world (probably from Mai).
Mikoto fans may also find this old LJ post from the hated_character community (one where fans stand up for fictional characters that many others don’t like) interesting. Personally, I’m not an anti-Mikoto person (in fact, there aren’t any characters in Mai-HiME I don’t like. Mai-Otome, on the other hand…), but I can understand why she gets hated on in the fandom - the whole behaving-like-a-cat thing, and her general naïvete compared to the other cast members due to her upbringing - but the times she does show flashes of responsibility, she’s quite the cutie. I don’t think Mai would have hung around her for so long if she didn’t believe there was some genuine good in her.
