Like real life, only bouncier, part 2

“And now, girls jumping on trampolines!”

Man, that phrase brings me back. It’s been X years since I last caught the Adam Carolla/Jimmy Kimmel years of The Man Show on Comedy Central. Testosterone-fueled antics and busty female dancers bouncing up and down for no good reason other than to keep viewership up. Not that I’ve got a problem with that, because…well, I’m a guy.

Imagine my surprise when I broke open my Kaleido Star DVD pack (it’s an anime series about a Japanese girl who travels to America in hopes of becoming a star circus performer), and the first episode ends with – you guessed it – a girl bouncing on a trampoline. I know I’m definitely not in the target demographic for this show, as it appears to be made primarily with a female audience in mind, but so far, I’m not yet disappointed. The dub voice for Sora grates a bit, and I’d gladly watch the thing in Japanese if not for the fact that the show takes place in America, and everyone appears to be speaking English. I’ll stick with things the way they are and try to deal. It would certainly make more sense to me that way. One episode down, 25 more to go (with this box set, and another 25 after that for the second season).

Establishing character moment in episode 1: Sora chasing down a purse-snatcher by jumping from awning to awning on rollerskates. That’s how you impress your potential audience for a big debut.

  1. From everything I have read (and the first episode, which is all I have seen so far) Kaleido Star has a very good reputation. You may enjoy it.
