Great expectations, not-quite-as-great disappointments

Me: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 demo is out today on the PlayStation network! Awesome!

*installs it, and sees that all of the online multiplayer items are greyed out*

Me: What? The demo is “offline multiplayer only”? Dammit!

*uninstalls it, returns to sobbing in corner*

Establishing character moments

I think I’ve written and re-written Red Specter (tentative title) at least three times since last year, and got stuck making any progress with it. Part of it was due to writer’s block. I had the characters planned out, but I still hadn’t fully figured out what I was going to do with them yet. My magic-using main character was simply going on about her daily life, with nothing of much significance happening. That’s when, after a third reboot of the story, I had it figured out…she’s gotta do something that’ll get the audience (and the characters in the story) to plausibly remember her.

Unleash the power of the sun

…or, “Why beat-em-ups and collect-a-thons shouldn’t mix.”

So I’m playing Sonic Unleashed, right? I’ve collected two Chaos Emeralds so far, and was told to go to Chun-nan to help the people beat back Eggman’s robots. Sounds easy, right? The problem with that is that I was short about four or five Sun Medals (which are required for passage into certain Day-themed stages), so I had to go back to see where I had forgotten to pick them up. Turns out it was through Windmill Isle’s Night Act 1, the first chance you get to go through the game as a Werehog.I’d conentrated so much on the “bash everything that doesn’t look like Sonic” part that I forgot that there were hidden and not-so-hidden medals to collect that I only finished the level with two of them (out of ten). You know what the means…find a game guide and search for those missing medals, damn it! I think I found the five that I needed to get past that damn level. Unfortunately, I have to return this game on Thursday, so I likely may not get any further than three Emeralds for now, until the inevitable price drop and I actually buy the damn thing.

Character filtering exercise

Slowly, but surely, Fanfiction.net is starting to make room for character filters and crossovers. It’s not all there yet, but it’s good to know that at least the mods there are listening to some of the suggestions/complaints that get stuffed in their boxes at least 5 hours every day. I’ve still gotta wonder why the Mai-HiME/Mai-Otome section isn’t listed as such, since that page has filters for characters from both series, some of which are exclusive to one or the other. Maybe I should write a litte note to the mods to have that fixed up, so that I don’t have to label my stories as such in the summary.

Summer in spring

This past weekend was my sister’s 17th birthday, which means that she (and soon, her boyfriend) will now be allowed to purchase “M”-rated games and watch “R”-rated movies without adult supervision (they’ll still have to get their IDs checked, though). Yesterday, we had a birthday bash under conditions that can only be described as “fucking hot”. Yesterday, we felt a high of 86 degrees, and today, the temperature climbed to 90. Not particularly optimal conditions for building a gazebo outside, I would think. On the bright side, we all got to enjoy the customary cake and ice cream, and nobody got hurt or passed out from heat exhaustion.
