I think someone at ALWIL Laboratories is going to have quite a bit of ’splainin’ to do. Last night’s update flagged more than a handful of relatively harmless .exe files as having a trojan horse called “Delf.mzg”. Skype, Spybot, and other programs were flagged by this update, with recommendation that they be sent to the treasure chest for recovery. Virus scans using other programs don’t sense anything harmful, so it’s likely to simply be a bunch of false positives.
The latest avast! virus database update early this morning seems to have caught all of this, and everything scans just fine. I downloaded the free version of AVG Anti-Virus and scanned my computer just in case, though.
Perhaps I should have known better not to leave my laptop’s battery charger plugged in 24/7. Now, the darn thing won’t charge up at all. Maybe I should leave it alone for a while and see if it’ll work again after a day’s rest.
Dunno what’s happened to me lately. I haven’t done any real programming work since I left college, and that’s presumably the thing I went to college for in the first place. My professional career has led me toward data processing, which is still within my chosen field, but since I got rid of all of my programming books, I haven’t had much of an opportunity (or an excuse) to continue practicing for now.
I’m mostly familiar with building Win32 applications using the Borland C++ compiler and Microsoft’s Visual C++ (Express) suite, which makes me a comparative newbie to…just about every programmer on the planet. On the bright side, it allows me to make relatively simple programs that don’t take days/weeks/months of my time to create. Hey…everyone’s gotta start somewhere, right? All I had to do was find a handful of handy-dandy tutorials, and now I’m back in the driver’s seat again. Let’s play some “Code Monkeys” now! Oh, yeah!
It’s been a while since I last attempted to make something in RPG Maker VX. Even though I don’t really intend on releasing anything of length, I can at least get my hand into programming and scripting again…something that I haven’t done extensively since I left college. Right now, I’m trying out making simple Ruby script commands that in previous RPG Maker versions would have required me to copy-and-paste twenty-plus similar events. Not only does that get tiresome after the first five iterations (and time-consuming after several more), but it becomes rather taxing on the game interpreter if used repeatedly. Still, I’m taking my time getting back into this, beginning again with small scripts before jumping into the more complex things, like creating objects (I plan to use them for storing stats not already covered by the game’s engine) and other types of “custom systems” the community seems to love so much.
Today, I bought that ASUS netbook laptop that I had my eye on since last week, and a new pair of glasses to go with it. I was long overdue for the glasses, since my last visual exam was more than two years ago. However, it’s the computer that I really wanted to have, since now I’ll be able to work on tasks and (theoretically) surf the web while I’m away from home. My parents have advised against me taking it to work, and for good reason. I suppose I could still use this little device for trips to my grandmother’s or brother’s houses, though. Maybe I should shell out for one of those devices where I can always stay connected, so that I don’t have to worry about having to set it up for different locations.
