So long, Blockbuster of Lansdowne

In one month’s time, the shopping center on the corner of Lansdowne and Baltimore Aves. in Lansdowne, PA will be almost completely empty. It’s no secret that Blockbuster Video’s fallen on hard times, with stiff competition in the movie rental business from Netflix and Redbox. Coupled with the slow disappearance of every other store in that lot (Rite-Aid was one of the first to go), it was only a matter of time before that Blockbuster would have to close. Traffic to that store had slowed down considerably over the years, even though up until about 4-6 months ago it was the only store there (sorta like how the MacDade Mall has maybe one or two small shops and the rest of it is boarded up). Still, 18 years (it was probably around longer than that, but members of my family had been on-and-off BB members since 1992) is a pretty damn long time for one store to be in one location, especially in this neighborhood. ‘Tis not all lost, however – I’ve made the decision to continue my game rental tendencies by reopening my GameFly account. And starting a week from this coming Monday, everything at that particular BB will go up for sale, so I’m likely to get a decent game or three out of the deal.

Open and shut case

So, I watched Shutter Island today in the movie theater. I have to say that I enjoyed it, though I disagree with one review that says “the twist will keep you guessing until the end”. If you keep a close eye on everything (and I don’t really watch that many thrillers; I’m more of an action/comedy man), the twist kinda makes sense. I had it figured out about an hour in…well, half of it, anyway.

Any reason to get out

The weather’s looking nice for the next few days, so I feel like it’s time to take a trip out of the house. Tuesday is the big release of Final Fantasy XIII, though I doubt I’ll be able to get my hands on it because I haven’t been able to get out to any store to preorder it. If I do get a chance, I may go down to the movie theater near the GameStop down there and watch Shutter Island while I wait for the smoke to clear (at the moment, it’s the only movie in theaters that’s supposedly “worth seeing”). However, there aren’t any showtimes posted before 3 PM for any of the movies, so I may have to wait and order this one through Amazon.com.

WillyFourEyes’ infinite playlist?

So, it’s finally come to this. I got a Netflix subscription, and mostly because I got an offer for a free PS3 disc that allows me to watch streaming videos. It also gave me a chance to finally see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for the first time (a movie that I’ve had on my Amazon “to buy” list for a while, but never actually got around to buying). It was a great film, but I’m usually one of those watch-’em-and-leave-’em guys, so I think this is the best approach for me. I wonder what I’ll pick up next…

Sometimes, it takes three

As proof that no movie reviewer should sit through a Uwe Boll movie alone, this week the Nostalgia Critic takes on Alone in the Dark and manages to survive (somehow) with the help of Spoony and Linkara. I doubt that those guys’ sanity will be the same after watching it. All in all, another great episode from the Critic, though I’m kinda disappointed that they didn’t make fun of Tara Reid’s mispronunciation of “Newfoundland” (her character’s supposed to be a scientist…yeah, I don’t get it either).
