What’s in Store for PSP and PS3 owners?

In the latest PS3 update (3.40), the big news was about it being made to accommodate the new PlayStation Plus service (membership for discounts on games, free demos and all that). The update has also incorporated a rating system for all of the games on the service, in order to help players recommend games to other players. In an effort to prevent forced up-voting and down-voting, you can only give the game a rating if you’ve actually played it and bought it from the store. So, what are the PlayStation Store shoppers buying and playing?

It bleeds money!

Shadowgrounds. Osmos. Super Laser Racer. Puzzle Kingdoms.

These are but a few of the games I had purchased during Steam’s massive summer sale. Puzzle Kingdoms in particular only cost me a single American dollar (it’s normally priced at $20…that’s a 95% discount!!)

So long, Blockbuster of Lansdowne

In one month’s time, the shopping center on the corner of Lansdowne and Baltimore Aves. in Lansdowne, PA will be almost completely empty. It’s no secret that Blockbuster Video’s fallen on hard times, with stiff competition in the movie rental business from Netflix and Redbox. Coupled with the slow disappearance of every other store in that lot (Rite-Aid was one of the first to go), it was only a matter of time before that Blockbuster would have to close. Traffic to that store had slowed down considerably over the years, even though up until about 4-6 months ago it was the only store there (sorta like how the MacDade Mall has maybe one or two small shops and the rest of it is boarded up). Still, 18 years (it was probably around longer than that, but members of my family had been on-and-off BB members since 1992) is a pretty damn long time for one store to be in one location, especially in this neighborhood. ‘Tis not all lost, however – I’ve made the decision to continue my game rental tendencies by reopening my GameFly account. And starting a week from this coming Monday, everything at that particular BB will go up for sale, so I’m likely to get a decent game or three out of the deal.

Would you like to buy something?

When I went to check out this week’s offerings on the Wii Shop Channel (and not finding anything interesting or new, since it was a slow week with only two new releases compared to the usual three or four), I noticed that there was more than one menu to go along with the usual “Recommended Titles” you see every time you go to start up. In addition to that, there also appear to be selections for games geared toward girls (“Girls Have Fun”), families (“Family Party Games”), sports fans (“Sports Fever”), and critically acclaimed games. The start menu only displays the top four of the games on each list which you haven’t bought yet, but if you click on the header above them, you’ll be taken to a menu where you can see the top 20 recommendations for each category. While the Wii Shop catalog is much smaller than the PlayStation Network Store or the Xbox Live Arcade, it’s nice to see a feature like this for shoppers who just want to jump right in and purchase a game without wading through a whole bunch of menus.

‘Tis the season to go outdoor shopping

Spring is an odd season for me. On one hand, you’ve got to contend with thunderstorms and bees and all kinds of annoyances like that. On the other hand, on days when the weather is nice, spring is awesome, especially if you’re in the mood for kite-flying or shopping around for deals at flea markets [...]
