With a title like BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, you’d expect our fifth “Gift of Game” entry to be either a) a role-playing game, b) a fighting game, or c) a first-person shooter. If you guessed b) to the previous question, give yourself a cookie. Click to read more…

Oh, the calamity!

As I continue on in my quest to run through Blaz Blue, I’ve managed to clear six different characters’ story modes, though I’ve only seen a definitive ending for Jin Kisaragi (the rest have either been nonstandard Game Overs, or a message saying “The alternate truth is yet to be found”) so far. I still wonder if I have to unlock other characters’ story paths to find a way to everyone’s true ending, like you had to do in Guilty Gear. That might explain how I was able to face off against a dark version of Ragna the second time I went down his story path…or maybe that was because I killed everyone I came across with his Astral Heat attack. That said, I still have to play through it with Tager, Arakune, Bang Shishigami, and Carl Clover. I’ll either have to continue with my experimentation, or try to hold out until someone whips up a story guide for it…I can’t seem to figure how this works yet.

I’ve got the Blaz Blues

Today’s addition to my video game collection is Blaz Blue, a 2D fighting game that is totally not Guilty Gear, but inspired heavily by it. I’ve given it a successful test run (in other words, I didn’t want to return it after playing it for 45 minutes), but I’m going to try and spend time playing with characters other than Noel “Big Guns” Vermillion and Litchi “Boobie Lady” Faye-Ling. For the time being, it looks like I’ll have to do all of my practice offline, as not a single opponent I’ve tried to connect wanted to play against me. Must be that spillover reputation I’ve got from playing Street Fighter IV and sucking horribly at it…
