Triple barrel!

Post Date: April 10, 2009 - 7:19 AM

I had nothing big to do at work yesterday, so in-between shifting furniture around for the new boss (hopefully he won’t be the same as the old boss), I hammered out the last three of the Valkyria Chronicles stories that I wanted to do for LiveJournal. They’re all short (no more than 220 words apiece), but I think you might like them. Carried Away, Fire Flower Ridge, and Separation Anxiety are now available for your reading pleasure.

On a slightly related subject (to the title, anyway), I picked up Dragon Quest Swords at GameStop at a discounted price of $20. I’m kinda reminded of Killer7 (a Gamecube game I have yet to play), where overworld movement is set on a predetermined path, but you can get full control of your sword movements when fighting enemies. During the town segments, I feel obligated to shout “Barrel!” whenever I search for something inside a barrel, as if I’m playing one of the Atelier games. Hmm…maybe I’ll play Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia over the weekend, since I have some extra free time.

Seven of hearts

I’ve gone back to writing Valkyria Chronicles fanfiction, with my total of short stories centered around Dallas and Edy now totaling five, with the addition of Trump Card to the roster. This is one of the “civilian AU” pieces I had wanted to do earlier. It just took me a while to find the right framing situation for it.

Now that that’s out of the way, I should probably focus on getting myself un-stalled from the game and actually finishing it, now.

Late for a very important date

Last night, I went ahead and decided to write my first fanfiction piece of the year. This one’s from the Touhou games, and it’s called …To Those Who Wait.

This is only my second Touhou-themed fic, and the first one I’ve thought of with Marisa and Alice (which appears to be the majority ship among the fandom). In a video game series that basically boils down to girls firing long streams of bullets at one another, it’s hard to find anything to work with unless you look at background materials published by ZUN and his fans. There are also no male characters in any of the games, but since (as a popular saying goes) “everyone in Gensokyo is gay“, that doesn’t seem to matter very much. It’s a product of the environment they live in.

Let’s writer’s blocking!

Don’t you just hate it when you feel like you have a great idea for a project, leave it alone for a while, try to start writing it again, but can’t think of any great ideas on how to write it? It’s happened to me a couple of times. I kept telling myself that I’d get back to writing It’s Never Lonely at the Top since August, but writer’s block hit me like a shoryuken to the chin, and I haven’t been able to continue the damn thing. Rather than try to hammer out a new chapter and have it wind up sub-par, I believe it might be better if I simply cancelled it and started anew. Sakura and Karin deserve better. The copy that I’ve posted on FanFiction.net will be deleted, along with my other orphaned story so that they don’t take up space (though the copy that’s on this website will stay put for history’s sake). Despair not, though, faithful readers! I do still plan on writing Sakura/Karin stories in the future, both friendly and…not. They’ll just take on a smaller scope than this one. I’ve decided that I won’t post any of it online until I’m totally satisfied with what I’ve written down, and then I’ll upload it chapter by chapter, and make changes accordingly. Now that I think about it, I probably should have done the same with my other novel…

Kicked out of the trophy room

Something’s wonky with the PlayStation Network lately. I picked up a few trophies from Lumines Supernova and Burnout Paradise, but for some reason I can’t sync them up with my PSN profile online (the progress meter hangs for about a minute and then stops at 21% before giving up and producing an error message). I wonder if this could be a side effect of everyone and their brother playing their brand-spanking new PS3 games they got for Christmas this year. I also had trouble getting online in LittleBigPlanet yesterday, but that appears to be unrelated to this, since the LBP servers are run by Media Molecule and not Sony.

While I wait for the programmers/troubleshooters to figure out a solution to this, I started writing again. Today it was two more Mai-HiME pieces: Cool Baby (Mai/Natsuki again) and My Own Strength (Yukino/Haruka). They’re rather short, but I feel that making them longer would lead to me rambling.
